Vibe magazine has shut down. I was so surprised when I found out. I really like Vibe magazine. I remember doing show prep for radio and I would look at various magazine's for info about the Urban community and Vibe was definately one of my sources. Vibe magazine was started in 1993 by a music industry legend! Quincy Jones. Apparently, the magazine experieced a drastic decline in ad pages and circulation. Also, early on in the year workers were put on a 4-day work week and other cuts were made as well as the decision to only produce 10 issues a year. It's crazy how businesses are having to shut there doors. It is rumored that Vibe may decide to become an online only magazine. I say go for it because that is the way everyone is going!
"On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today," said Danyel Smith, former Chief Content Officer of Vibe Media Group and Editor in Chief of Vibe. "We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news," Smith said in a statement released to AllHipHop.com. "It’s a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine’s sixteenth anniversary, it’s a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you."
I wish they could have at least been able to finish and release the Michael Jackson issue.
