Bad Boy Records Goes To Interscope

Bad Boy Records has been a part of Warner Music Group for almost five years. Now that the contracting is up Diddy decided to move his imprint over to Interscope Geffen A&M. The first release to come will be Diddy's forthcoming album, Last Train to Paris. At this point all of Diddy's future releases will be distributed through Interscope Records, as will albums by any future artists to join the Bad Boy label. However, artists currently signed to Bad Boy will continue to be released by Warner Music Group. According to Diddy, the new Bad Boy label with Interscope will operate like a small boutique label, and the emphasis will be on signing unique talent. “We are going to take our time with the amount of acts that we sign,” Diddy stated, saying that the label will cater to “superstars.”

Jay Z Speaks To Oprah About His Father

Jay-Z spoke with Oprah Winfrey about his father, his anger and his old life. Check out an edited version of the interview. Of course pick up the October issue of O Magazine.

Oprah Winfrey: When you were 5, your family moved to the Marcy projects -- and then your father left when you were 11. When you look back at that, what did your 11-year-old self feel?
Jay-Z: Anger. At the whole situation. Because when you're growing up, your dad is your superhero. Once you've let yourself fall that in love with someone, once you put him on such a high pedestal and he lets you down, you never want to experience that pain again.
So I remember just being really quiet and really cold. Never wanting to let myself get close to someone like that again. I carried that feeling throughout my life, until my father and I met up before he died.
Oprah: Wow. I've never heard a man phrase it that way. You know, I've done many shows about divorce, and the real crime is when the kids aren't told. They just wake up one day and their dad is gone. Did that happen to you?
Jay-Z: We were told our parents would separate, but the reasons weren't explained. My mom prepared us more than he did. I don't think he was ready for that level of discussion and emotion. He was a guy who was pretty detached from his feelings.
Oprah: Did you wonder why he left?
Jay-Z: I summed it up that they weren't getting along. There was a lot of arguing.
Oprah: And did you know you were angry?
Jay-Z: Yeah. I also felt protective of my mom. I remember telling her, "Don't worry, when I get big, I'm going to take care of this." I felt like I had to step up. I was 11 years old, right? But I felt I had to make the situation better.
Oprah: How did that change you?
Jay-Z: It made me not express my feelings as much. I was already a shy kid, and it made me a little reclusive. But it also made me independent. And stronger. It was a weird juxtaposition.
Oprah: I've read that when you were 12, you shot your brother in the shoulder. Did your father's leaving have anything to do with that? Did it turn you into the kind of angry kid who would end up shooting his brother?
Jay-Z: Yes -- and my brother was dealing with a lot of demons.
Oprah: How old was he?
Jay-Z: About 16. He was doing a lot of drugs. He was taking stuff from our family. I was the youngest, but I felt like I needed to protect everybody.
Oprah: So how did you get back in touch with your father?
Jay-Z: My mom set up a meeting. And now I realize why -- it makes all the sense in the world. I remember very distinctly that I had a conversation with her in my kitchen. I was saying, "You know, Ma, I've really been trying to look inward, and maybe I'm just not meant to fall in love like other people do." She just looked at me like, "Hush up, boy."
Oprah: Wow.
Jay-Z: And I guess from that point, she figured out what was wrong with me, and she planned a meeting between me and my father. I was like, "Ma, I'm a grown man. I don't need a dad now."
Oprah: You didn't feel a hole in your soul?
Jay-Z: I never looked at that. I guess I didn't want to deal with it. Because, you know, once I looked, I'd have to do something about it. And I guess I still had too much resentment and anger.
Oprah: In one of your songs, you wrote that you weren't sure if your father even remembered your birthday is in December.
Jay-Z: I believed that. When I was a kid, I once waited for him on a bench. He never showed up. Even as an adult, that affected me. So when my mom set up this meeting, I told her he wouldn't come -- and the first time, he didn't. At that point, I was really done, but Mom pushed for another meeting, because she's just a beautiful soul.
Oprah: The second time, your father showed up.
Jay-Z: He showed up. And I gave him the real conversation. I told him how I felt the day he left. He was saying stuff like "Man, you knew where I was." I'm like, "I was a kid! Do you realize how wrong you were? It was your responsibility to see me." He finally accepted that.
Oprah: Where had he been?
Jay-Z: At his mom's house 10 minutes away from me. That was the sad part.
Oprah: Was there any explanation he could have offered that would have satisfied you?
Jay-Z: Yes -- and that's why we were able to mend our relationship.
Oprah: What was his reason?
Jay-Z: When I was 9, my dad's brother got stabbed, and my dad went looking for the guy who did it. People would call in the middle of the night and tell him, "So-and-so is out here." So my dad would get up, get his gun, and go outside to look for the guy. After a while, my mom was like, "Hey, this is your family now. You can't do that." But this was my dad's baby brother. And my dad was in so much pain that he started using drugs and became a different person. So I understand that the trauma of the event, coupled with the drugs, caused him to lose his soul.
Oprah: When you saw him again, had he come back to himself?
Jay-Z: He was broken. He had a bad liver, and he knew that if he continued drinking, it would kill him. But he didn't stop.
Oprah: How soon after you saw him did he die?
Jay-Z: A couple of months. I got him an apartment, I was buying furniture. And he passed away.
Oprah: Did you instantly make peace with him during that conversation?
Jay-Z: Pretty much. I felt lighter.
Oprah: The conversation freed you in ways that you hadn't been free before?
Jay-Z: One hundred percent.
Oprah: Did it open the door for you to have a life with love in it?
Jay-Z: Absolutely.
Oprah: So what's your personal creed?
Jay-Z: Be true to yourself -- and keep things simple. People complicate things.
Oprah: My creed is that intention creates reality.
Jay-Z: Now I'm having an aha moment! That's true.

Quincy Jones, Tyrese, QD3 Team Up

I read this and I think this is awesome! Producer Quincy Jones and his son QD3 have teamed up with Tyrese Gibson to launch the "5 Million Kids National Education Campaign".
All three are doing this by partnering with Operation HOPE, which is a Los Angeles based non-profit that provides economic and educational tools for youth advancement. I really appreciate the goal in mind. They are aiming to teach 5 million children, parents and teachers how to get rich legally through financial literacy. Within this they will encourage our youth to take better interest in school activities as well as open 50,000 new bank accounts for the “unbanked” and “under banked” using the proceeds of the EITC benefits. Quincy Jones stated, “It takes 20 years to change a culture,” He continues, “We’ve spent the last 20 years making dumb sexy.”

Man Impersonates Cop In Police Department

So the title already had me, SMH (shaking my head). Philadelphia police say at around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday an unknown man came into the 18th Police District building through the back. Hmm... Investigators say the man who they later found out is, Kelvin Adams, was wearing a gun belt and handcuffs on his waist as he walked in. They then found him in the women's locker room. That is scary... who knows what he was planning to do. At that point he was taken into custody. Oh and how about this, on top of him coming into the police district he actually parked his rental car in the spot reserved for the 18th District commanding officer. LOL. Is he serious?? Who does this??? Like the police officers there don't know eachother and wouldn't look at him like, who's that??? Oh he must be new... Ha... yeah right. Adams is charged with Burglary, Criminal Trespass, Theft, Receiving Stolen Property, Unlawful use of computer, Criminal Mischief, Unauthorized use of auto, and Impersonating a Police Officer. SMH.

Abercrombie Sues Beyonce

Beyonce has plans to create her own fragrance and name it after her alter ego, Sasha Fierce. However, clothing retailer Abercrombie and Fitch filed a lawsuit against Beyonce on Tuesday saying her frangrance name constitutes trademark infringment, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices. Abercrombie and Fitch are claiming they have owned the Fierce trademark since 2002. The lawsuit asks the court to order Beyonce to stop her plan to sell a fragrance with a similar name. Dag! That's whack... I guess she can just call it Sasha???

Jeff Garcia Re-signed To The Eagles

With McNabb getting injured and dealing with a broken rib this past sunday the Eagles decided to get some insurance, just in case. They have re-signed Jeff Garcia. You will learn I love the game of football! I do think McNabb needs to take his time out to heal. I don't think it's the smartest thing for him to come out and play not fully healed. Jeff Garcia who is a 10-year veteran and played for Philadelphia in 2006 and went 5-1 in six starts while McNabb was injured back then.
"Whether it's a week or two weeks or the entire season, I'm excited about the opportunity," Garcia said in a conference call. "As far as a team I can go to and blend right in, this is the team for me to do that."

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze

First, my condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of Patrick Swayze. He has passed away at the age of 57. Swayze died of pancreatic cancer, his publicist Annett Wolf told CNN. It was publicized in early March of 2008 by Swayze's doctor, Dr. George Fisher, that the actor was suffering from the disease. "Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," Wolf said in a statement Monday. He will be missed, gave us some great performances. Dirty Dancing and Ghost are two of my favorite DVD's to pop in when I want to just chill. I thought I'd post some pictures from the films.

Janet Jackson in Harper's Bazaar

Janet Jackson did an exclusive interview with Harper's Bazaar Magazine where she discusses her brother Michael and confirms her break up with long time boyfriend Jermaine Dupri.

On how she’s coping: I’ve been doing okay. Work helps focus all of that energy on something that is of value to you.
There are other things Janet would like the world to know about Michael: He loved to laugh. The last time we were together, he’d laugh so hard, he would just start crying. Sometimes his humor would be corny, sometimes dry. He loved the Three Stooges, he loved slapstick, he loved Eddie Murphy in his silly comedies. He loved to have fun. He loved to play.
Janet recently broken up with Jermaine Dupri after seven years is is asked if she still believes in marriage: For some people, sure! I don’t know if I’ll get married again. I’ll put it like this: If God wants me to, then I will. Is she Dating? Yeah, I’ve had people ask me out. I haven’t entertained any offers thus far, but I’m locking myself in my work right now.
On children: Sure, I’d adopt. And I think that if I’m really supposed to have kids, it will happen, if that’s God’s plan for me.
